Ulugbek is the son of Saifullo and Mariam, owners of Lyabi House Guesthouse, a remarkably modern guesthouse in the beautiful old city of Bukhara. Bukhara is one of my favorite places in the world, and not least because of its people. Ulugbek was my most patient but demanding Russian tutor. He shares his name with the great Uzbek astronomer and mathematician, Mirzo Ulugbek.
